Zika virus warning for pregnant women.

If you’re pregnant and planning to take a holiday this summer, please be aware of the Zika virus.

The number of cases of the Zika virus is on the rise, and although it is a very mild infection and usually harmless, in pregnant women it can cause serious birth defects.

The Zika virus is spread by mosquitoes and outbreaks have been seen in the Pacific region, and also in South and Central America and the Caribbean. If you are travelling to any of these areas, please seek medical advice beforehand.

Symptoms to look out for are:

  • Rash
  • Itching all over body
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Pain behind eyes
  • Lower back pain
  • Joint pain
  • Conjunctivitis

If you’re travelling abroad, you can reduce your chances of catching the Zika virus. The tops tips are:

  • Use mosquito repellent that contains DEET
  • Wear loose clothing that covers your arms and legs
  • Sleep under a mosquito net

If you are pregnant, try avoid travelling to any high risk areas. If it’s essential for you to travel, please seek medical attention beforehand.
